黑鸡, "black chicken"
oil on linen, 8"x8"

The Chinese have been eating a chicken whose natural skin color is purple-black for a very long time. This "black chicken" is considered healthier and it common in hot pots and stews.

I, for some reason, really enjoy painting dead chickens. I have also come to discover that the more you look at a chicken's face the more it looks like a dinosaur.

I attempted this painting on unprimed linen although there are bits of discoloration and pencil marks that I couldn't completely get rid of. (any ideas?)

Hi Ross. I hang out with your other half last night. It was lots of fun. We wish you were there.

Love the dead chicken! Maybe turtle looks like dinosaur too. what do you think?
Unprimed canvas always observes paint, but if you like the look of it, maybe you can try rabbit skin glue instead of gesso. They dry out clear, so it will have the color of canvas and paint doesn't observe the surface that much.
I've been lazy and not posting my paintings. but I will do it some time soon.

wo...basel nuttiness comes to an end. after a week of naughty debauchery and artful behaviours and inadequacies, miami settles to see the expulsion of an international, elitist crowd. that's why i haven't been checking in, my apologies. your black chicken is deformed; do you pose most of your dead chickens in the same way? somehow, their position recalls the way piles of corpses look on the news...eerie, good work. thanx. i emailed you a link to a painter whom you might already love or hate, let me know...
sadly, far-away,

I kind of like the red discoloration under the chicken's neck, but I can understand why you'd want to control it.
I once met a great older painter in a gallery of the Chicago Art Institute. We were standing in front of an intense Francis Bacon painting on raw canvas- she said she hoped Bacon had primed the canvas in some way, otherwise the painting would fade away with time. Perhaps she was talking about rabbit skin glue. We went on to have a great conversation about making art. It's a funny thing to remember so vividly- this was at least 20 years ago!

Hi Hon! Saturday went to an Art Basel show opening of my friend Daniel, met up with Chad and Leif at the Carnival Center and we went pretty much in the ghetto where warehouses were transformed into galleries for a couple of days. pretty amazing the amount of money and time spent and drinking going on at these shows.
I left with a sleeping Leif while Chad and Catalina went on to more "art shows" !
MY opinion of art these days is as follows-ART to me, is a verb, pretty much MAKING art for the artist alone is the most important aspect, as alot art is crap in the end and unimportant to the majority of people-either it is considered a "pretty picture" or "horrid"or misunderstood by most or an investment to some = speculating on the growth or demise of an artist, or would-be posers who never have a kind word for anything just cut "art" to shreds.
I personally like color and I appreciate technique and I can find NO fault with the VERB ART as an effort of an artist. But some of the stuff people worship as art is JUST SAD!!!!
1 of the first things I saw was a giant piece with 4 smashed electric guitars(3 vintage Italian guitars at that!!!) dripped with red, black and white paint! Useless! regardless of what the artist thought!
can you just imagine my disgust???????
Avant-garbage!!!!
Art is a mystery for sure!
But the Basel I saw was one big social drinking party!!!!
....as far as dead black chickens, I choose life and color energy for my art and my chicken is the whitest of the white I can find...boneless skinless breasts no heads eyes or blackness!!!!!
Go ahead and paint dead stuff but...not too much! At least your technique is good, you have a very painterly quality to your work even with dead black chicken!
